Welcome

Before you start to create your altered book it's a good idea to see some work done by professional Altered book and Visual Journal artists. You should look at all three artists first. Next, decide which one you would like to write about.
Write at least a pargraph response about one of the artist's work. You may talk about their work as a whole or a specific book or page. Remember to use "artspeak". Talk about color, shape, texture, line, and how the artist used these elements of art to make something interesting.

  1. Karen Whimsey is a fabulous person and it shows through her work. Her altered book "The Art of Happiness" is filled with the most vibrant colors to the point where it is shocking. I notice the colors specifically on pages 3, 12, and 13. Page 8 has variety because the colors go from purple to green and the shapes go from lines to circles, thus I find this page appealing. Page 18 brings emphasis to the red colored coral because it is on the blue page, with the addition of other small details around. This makes the page have that “wow” factor. Something I also picked up on in Karen Whimsey’s work is how on each page of the altered book, she has a small square added in that mostly matches her drawing. I think this is a fun way to bring the book together more and helps make it as amazing at it is.

  2. I loved Teesha Moore's altered books. Each page was completely different than the next, however all of them had a quote that she illustrated using many methods. She combined drawing, painting and cut up pictures into a vibrant patchwork of art in what was once a book. She even creates mythical creatures to add interest to her pages. Many of her quotes are about finding your self and loving and caring for the planet. Other pages have sentences on it that seem like random thoughts that pop into her head or feelings that she may have at one given moment. My favorite quote of hers is "Unless artists can remember what it was to be a little girl they are only half complete as artist and woman." Teesha's art makes me think about life and appreciate the beauty that it creates.

  3. I felt Dan Eldon’s altered books were the most interesting. I admired how he started from just basic notebooks with little sketches and built upon that. Additionally, I liked how he collaged pictures, and how he added drawings to some of his pictures. I found it interesting that he depicted Kenya a lot in his altered books. In addition, I liked how on some pages with black and white photos he added some bright colors to make the page pop, and not be dull. On another note, I thought it was neat that he added texture to the book with objects like feathers, fabric, or even a band-aid. He did not really have sharp lines, which made the whole book kind of blend together and appear very harmonious. All in all, I really admired Dan Eldon’s altered books, and how they combined photographs and drawing, without being too vibrant for my taste. - Sarah Wilbert

  4. When I looked through Dan Eldon’s work I saw how he liked to put the same type of picture on the same page but in a way that brings it to a whole new level. In one of his books called playing there was the one page that I saw that was all about war. It had burned pictures and all different things that were in history. It made me feel like I was there in war with them. I also like how every page is not the same colors. On one page there could be only black and white but on the next there are blends of all different colors. On this page he never really has any 90 degree angles it is all burned tilted and very cool. I in joy his work and I hope I could do dome thing like that.

  5. The book that really caught my attention was "The Art of Happiness" by Karen Whimsey. This is so because Karen uses bight colors on almost every page and the colors really mesh well. For example on page 7 the red and the orange really make the page "pop". Another example of this is on page 15. All of the colors contrasted against each other really make a cool design. The shapes of the colors are almost like multicolored raindrops forming around one another to almost form a sun. I think that all of the pages together almost make you happy because of the bright colors and the designs they make.

  6. Hey its Tyler Blansfield,I really liked Karen Whimsey's altered book, The Astronomer's Apothecary. I found one page really cool, because she cut a square out of the middle of the page, and it looks like she put little jars of sands and rocks. Also, i love all the detail she did. My favorite part is the two stars, the string, and the hole she cut out because it makes a smily face. The backround is also really interesting. I really cant even tell you whats in it because its to busy and i like that.

  7. i looked through pretty much every book that each altered book artist made and the one that caught my attention the most was "The Art of Happiness" by Karen Whimsey.I found all the pages in that book interesting but the one that stood the most out to me was page 7.I loved the way she cut a square in the page, pasted a picture in the square and continue the picture in on to the pages. I found it cool how she left some words uncolored so that the uncolored words around the pages write a little poem or story. I also love the honeycomb design around the page. I just love how she makes the whole thing work altogether. -Kenny Kiriluk

  8. I really like Teesha Moore's altered book for many different reasons. The way that she used all the deferent colors was so unique and pretty. In all the different pages, it seemed that a face was present, all looking similar, but different at the same time. She also did some really interesting things with her handwriting, which made each page look so different from the last. I also thought it was amazing how she could take an ordinary object like a tree, transform it into something that is so meaningful with the words that she "drapes" around the tree. All of her pages fascinated me and were fun to look through.

  9. I really enjoyed Karen Whimsey's "The Art of Happiness" because she used a lot of bright colors. I think the bright colors really made the book a lot brighter and made it happier. I also loved how she based some of the pages around nature like flowers and birds. I especially liked page 41 of the book because I like the way all the bright colors pop from the black background. I loved the way she used a bright background on some pages and then used cool colors as the vocal points. Karen used so many colors that really catch your attention in her book. I loved the over all happiness of the book. - Jillian R.

  10. Monica Rahman: Overall, I enjoyed the books from all of the artists, but the works of Karen Whimsy were truly outstanding. In her work, Whimsy combines several artistic elements with craftmanship to yeild interesting combinations of two-dimensional and three dimensional pieces. She understands the proper areas to place an object in order for it to appeal to the eye and create an overall effect to the project. What I realized while viewing her books was that she is clearly fascinated in shape, color, and TEXTURE. My most appraised book is "The Astronomer's Apothecary". Although there isn't much within the book, I enjoyed the several textures in the background that she combined to make the entire page "pop". Additionally, the potion bottles and tags hanging off the sides gave it a realistic feel; or at least the aura of a children's pop-up book. Also, I liked the fact the the color scheming of the peice wasn't too colorful. The simpleness of a collage of grays, blues, and whites tied into the theme of and "apothecary". Lastly, the final trait of the book that made it the most attractive was its scrapbook appearance. The simplicity of her work made it incorporate an attractive vintage theme. No wonder her work is always selling. o-o

  11. i really appreciated the work of Karen Wimsey as well as Teesha Moore. my favorites from karen were the broken dolls and 18 wishes altered books. the way she used a variety of cool and warm colors really catched my eye. i also liked how she wasnt afraid to try different things, to make the book look eerie or enchanting. i also think Teesha is amazing at her collages. her colors are so bright and contrast well. i admire her attention in details and how some things are unpoportonate to create more of an abstract look. i find both their work veery inspirational.

  12. Hi Mr.Sacco! I really liked Karen Whimsy’s altered books, especially Motor Girls on Crystal Bay. One thing I really liked about this book was that from the cover it looks very ordinary, but when you open it up it's like a whole story that comes to life. She uses many different colors and mediums to create her masterpieces. I liked something different about every page so it would be hard to chose one favorite, I really want a 100 so I figured why not describe what I like about each page! :)
The first page was definitely not my favorite but there were a few elements that I really liked. One was how she found words in completely different parts of the page and made a sentence/poem, and blocked out the rest of the words. I also liked the way she stamped/painted the flower on the page, this was very unique because even though the background is blue the darker blue flower still popped out and caught your attention. One last thing I liked about the page was the picture of the little girls with the lace behind it, this takes a moment to notice but I really think the lace was a nice touch to the image.
Page two was one of my favorites! I loved how she added on to the page to make it a bigger layout. When the layout is closed I really liked the lace heart in the center with the strings and frills, this is very me and something I might have thought of. I found the found the way you open this page to be really interesting, almost like a miniature altered book inside the pre-existing altered book. When you opened the “mini altered book” I really love the color use on all four pages of this spread. I loved the way this collage all came together to look like one effortless image. Once again I also loved how she used the pre-existing words in the book the create poetry. One final thing I really enjoyed about this page was the beading at the top of the page, this made the page all come together and this also seemed like something I might do.
I LOVED page 3! My favorite thing about this is that at first glance you don’t realize one side of the butterflies isn’t a wing; it takes a second look to realize that it was actually drawings of random objects made to look like a wing. Also it reminded me of the cover of an album from my favorite band, Paramore. This page was really unique and made you search for the reality of the image.
I really only liked two things about page four, the sea shells in a nitch and the beading across the page. I really liked the sea shells because I actually had a similar idea for one of my pages in my altered book. Also the same for page five, I really only liked the color pallet. And I didn’t like much of page 6 at all; it didn’t seem to fit in with the rest of the book.
In page seven I really liked the way she used different images in a collage to frame another image. I also liked the way the text was used on this page. Page eight was also one of my favorites, it used one of my favorite color pallets and I really really really liked the word tags and yarn at the top of the page!
Finally page nine was again, not one of my favorites. But I did like how she repeated the techniques from the first page but this time, instead of little girls sitting together it was grown women. I liked this because I think it symbolized these little girls journey through friendship and I thought that was cute:)

  13. All three altered book artists books were outrageous. Dan Eldon New York book really caught my eye. Mr. Eldon took his book to the next level. He took one idea and didn't just put it on paper, he brought it to life. He collaged some pictures on one page and burned another. Mr. Eldon also expanded his variety of colors. No more than two single pages had the same colors which made it more interesting to look at. I hope I can try and succeed with using some of his traits within my altered book.

  14. I really liked teesha Moore's altered books. I love how every page is random with many different colors and shapes. Most of the colors are every bright. Also each page has a qoute or story that can inspire someone. She shows much detail in her work. I think how she sometimes makes the letters differnt sizes and sorta like a rainbow shape. And i like how almost every page has a face on it that kind of cool but creepy at the same time.

  15. Of all the artists, I took the greatest interest in the work of Teesha Moore. I was fascinated at the way she combines photos into her artwork so smoothly. What also caught my eye was the colors she used. All very bright, and they mix so well. I also liked the work of Dan Eldon. I realy like that sort of rough look it has. Also using mixed media, Dan's book, "Finding A Style", was definitely my favorite.

  16. Out of all of the art pieces and artists, my favorite had to be Dan Eldon’s New York and Beyond book. One of the things I liked was how he incorporated Superman in a positive way using warm colors, and in a serious/dark way using cool colors. Another thing I found creative was how he used a pack of dogs, warm and cool colored buildings, and putting flames on different buildings to show just how wild and diverse New York (New York City) really is. What I liked the most was how Dan Eldon incorporated not only the busy, popular parts of New York, like Madison Avenue, but also the Native American tribes of New York. The artist used a combination of warm and cool colors, bizarre shapes and interpretations of people, and the different parts of New York. That is why this book appealed to me the most out of all the other ones.

  17. I extremely enjoyed looking at the work of Karen Wimsey and her outstanding altered books. My favorite was The Art of Happiness because Karen uses warm colors that and pictures of things that generally set a happy mood for a person. Also, Karen uses symmetrical balance to her advantage so that she can have more space to display her artwork and on some pieces you can't spot the binding of the book like on page 9 of The Art of Happiness. Another thing that Karen does is cut out a small piece of a page and put a lively picture that has to do with her drawing under the page. Finally, Karen was being herself and drew what made her happy on all pages. The colors contrast well with each other. Karen's work attractive, well thought-out, an inspiring! - Aaron Rosenfeld

  18. I really enjoyed Karen Wimsey's Poetry book. I think printing the image on silk paper is really unique, and gives the piece a great look. Also, the piece's edges fade out in the end giving it an imperfect appearance, which nature is all about. I found her broken doll collection also interesting, if a little dark. The broken dolls, being a 3-d object let the piece stand out and give it an appearance like it belonged to someone.Teesha's work was more drawing i felt, and I liked that. She seems to enjoy bright colors, but still finds a way to contrast them. Her work was very appealing to the eye. Alot of it was abstract, and you can feel that she just let her hand do all the work. Overall, I found their work to be both inspiring, and professional.

  19. I really enjoyed Dan Eldon's altered books. I think they stood out from the other two artists. Although he followed a common theme in each book, every page was different and equally captivating. I hope to make my altered book somewhat like some of his but with a kasey twist to it. I thought Teesha Moore's books were also cool but i felt that every page looked the same and they had too much going on. I liked Dan's books because they weren't really about things he enjoyed but things that were happeneing and many of his experiences. Lastly, I think Karen Wimsey's work was also awesome but her books weren't very realistic, by saying that i mean u can't close them.

She also uses patterns but not to the point of them being busy. Most of all I really liked her altered books because they are so fun.

  23. Hi mr sacco! i really enjoy looking at the art of happinesswrrite by John Cowper Powys - 1935 altered by karen hatzigeogiou 2004 to 2008 the different colors really interested me so when i was looking for what to choose i immediatey looked at Karen Hatzigeorgiou's altered books because of the bright colors and interesting focal points through out each page! on the first book it is alot of warm colors which really sets a calm and loving moode haha! i love warm colors ecspecially with nature, i thought that the first book Karen did was really exceptional! the second book wasnt my facorite but then the fourth book on the top line was so interesting, all the cool colors and shape of the body was so different, this altered book really inspired me to do somthing with my altered books using cool colors and different shapes to explain the moode i am,, and if im using cool colors im usually in a calm moode.the 8th one is my favorite colors (purple and green) i cant really decided what that is because its cool colors but its also a little warming and is like a comforting drawing like dont worry about anything just relax! the 16th book was really original because she used somthing *her hand* and made art, i always try to do that but it never works! i usually use sharpee but for now on maybe i will actually draw on my hand because htat makes the drawing really beautiful and the hand blends in nicely with green and yellow backround (towards the bottom)

    LOVE MARIA SICARI PERIOD 8!!!!

  24. My favorite altered book was Karen Wimsy's The Art Of Happiness. That book really caught my eye the second I saw it. Its bright and its eye catching colors draw you straight to the book. I loved the way she put different designs in to make bizarre looking shapes that fit perfectly. The book also sets its own mood, it has a very bright and happy kind of mood. She has such a vast imagination, you can tell her ideas just never stop flowing as she creates these altered books. I'd like to set a goal to create such a mood and creativity into my book as Karen did.

  25. Karen Hatzigeorgiou's altered book collection stood out to me the most. The collection includes dozens of pieces that you can feel her same emotions just by looking at the colors. Some are darker and sad but most are filled with life and happiness! I also found it very interesting how Karen used the text in the book to highlight the words of her poems. Not only that but her drawings can be connected to the feeling and meanings of her poems. Through these altered books she not only proves how great of an artist she is but also that she is a talented writer. I think i was attracted to hers especially because her designs are very similar to my tastes and inspires me with ideas for what i would like to do with mine this year in studio!

  26. HELLO MR. SACCO AND MY FELLOW NINTH PERIOD STUDIO ART CLASSMATES:
I chose to write my comment on one of Karen Whimsys' altered books, she has so many books to choose from. I decided to choose the one titled "Wishes" or what it was inspired from "18 wishes". It really caught my eye that every page had a very visible and bold focal point ( It is something I want to sink my teeth into) as Mr. Sacco would say. She has a dead set color scheme which you think would be boring but she makes it work by keeping all of her focal points on the same topic but different in so many ways, like size, color, and texture. One thing that I didn't see in this book is little nitches. I feel that she could have done some nice things with nitches in her book. Karen does a great job of staying with cool colors and not mixing them with the warm. One of my favorite parts of this book is the backgrounds of each page. The backgrounds are not just solid colors, I guess you could say they are "flowy" because they have a solid color but with nice, soft, gentle swirls that kind of set the tone for the whole theme of the page. She is so talented and I definitely learned something from looking at her work.

  27. I don't really think I can even attempt to out-do Jessica Simms' entry. Considering the fact that the only links that worked on my computer were Karen Whimsy, and Dan Eldon, I had limited choices as to which altered books I viewed. What really caught my eye was “Winter Moon” by Karen Whimsy. I really liked the way that the backdrops of each page were a different…texture, I guess, is the most accurate word. I really liked the way that the poem went along each page. The beauty of the poetry combined with the beauty of the artwork made the book exquisite.
Another book that I found interesting was “Heart-chitecture” by Karen Whimsy. I really enjoyed the way that the book was completely black and white, except for certain details that were lightly painted. The color really caught my eye. Although the spread in the book didn’t have a specific focal point, the sporadic colors almost told a story. It showed the true importance of the painting.

This inspires me to incorporate a lot of colors and different designs on each spread. I like the different cultures of people on the spreads. I really like the African influence on some of the pages. I enjoy looking at the old pictures. This Book remindes me of war and distruction.

  30. The altered book that I found to be most interesting was, The Art of Happiness, altered by Karen Whimsy. I liked this particular altered book because it was colorful, unique and somewhat abstract. A few of my favorite pages of this book are pages 1, 7, 21, 25, and 29. Starting with page one, I liked this page simply because it is very vibrant and bright and catches your attention right away, I feel that it stands out in this book and is a great way to begin an altered book. I found page seven to be interesting once again because of the bright colors and because it seems to look uniquely abstract, the red design on the orange really looked very interesting. As for page twenty-one I liked the look of this design upon the page, it really shows how what this artist puts on the page is usually a larger scale version of what is in the little box that can be found on every page of this book. Moreover I liked page twenty-five of this altered book due to the way in which it is painted I like how the paints seem to run into each other, I also liked how well the purple and orange go with each other in this painting. The last page that I would like to comment upon is page twenty-nine; this was one of my favorite pages in this book because the page seems to have a unique texture to it. Furthermore some of the aspects of this book that appear on every page that I would like to point out are the way in which the artist emphasizes certain words by leaving the paper surrounding them white and how these worlds form poems and phrases, the other thing that I found interesting that appeared on every page were the little squares that the artist seems to build off of on each page. And those are some of the reasons as to why I liked this altered book. I would also like to comment upon the work of Teesha Moore, I thought that her collages were really unique and interesting; she used very vibrant colors and her work really stood out.

  31. I really enjoyed looking at Karen Whimsy’s artwork. All of her books were fantastic, but one that really caught my eye was, The Astronomer’s Apothecary. It looks like she has many different patterned papers that were shades of blue, silver, and pearly white, cut up and layered as a background, which I really liked. It also looks like her background has texture to it and it gave me ideas on what I want to do with my backgrounds. I thought the tags on the sides of the book were very creative, and I thought the ribbons and rope things that hang off the tags gave them a nice touch. I also notice the book has a slight shimmer to it which makes everything pop and become more 3-D. Since every bit of this book was really amazing, it was hard to choose my favorite part. But, I noticed I really like the little bottles with sand, rocks, glass, etc. I like the way the bottle in the middle with the blue rock pieces were sparkling. I like the look of old, vintage things and for some reason these bottles reminded me of the old decorations put around homes and other places. I also liked the window cut out with the little girl in it. With the dark black background it stood out among the other details on the page. Overall, everything was really interesting and she did an awesome job!

  35. ciao sacco, come sta?...anyways...i looked through most of the artists altered books and the ones that really stood out to me...and well i was amazed by were by karen whimsey and teesa moores. i absolutely loved whimseys altered doll book collection and her day of the dead. while most of the kids in our totally awesome 9th period class were pretty creeped out by the deformed doll libs poking through her pages i fell in love. i love creepy old dolls and have a bit of a collection myself but i really liked how she put a bit of an angelic feel into these dolls and although creepy indeed, they looked as if they would be sweet. i also liked how all of her pages were distressed and looked burned. her other book series i loved (her day of the dead books) ive always liked the day of the dead and have pretty fascinated by it all. i love all the colors, skulls, and decorations of it all and the fact that they take the time to really appreciate the dead makes me love it even more. this series of books were amazing and designed so perfectly. and i love her mini skeletons. finally teesa moores books were great too, when i first saw them they automaticcaly reminded me of Day of The Dead, i didnt even know Karen Whimsey did a collecton on that. i love her colors and such intricate designs on each page. i was amazed by all of them! and i cant wait to finish mine

  36. I really like Teesha Moore's art work because her choice of colors really stood out to me. I like how she used bright colors. Another thing I like was she used a lot of details in each of her pages, which you wouldnt think would make a big difference but it really did. I also really liked how each piece had a specific thing that she was trying to represent. Her book was really out of the ordinary and i loved it!

  37. I was most interested in Karen Whimseys "The Art of Happiness" altered book. My favorite page in this book was the "What is Happiness?" page. I like it because it used a lot of warm colors and i liked how she incorporated painting and magazine clippings in one page, i think that it was smart to change it sround. The reason why this was my favorite altered book was because it was simple but it also had a lot of colors and it was very interesting to look at.

  38. I really enjoyed Karen Whimseys collection of The Art of Happiness. I liked this one the best because I love the colors. The colors really go with each other they have great contrast. The art works are simple but very interesting and beautiful. All of them are different but cool.

  39. I was really impressed by all of Teesha Moore's work. I loved the use of color and collage. She used a lot of interesting of proportion. She had a lot of faces and bodies collaged out pieces that were the wrong size (like heads way to small for their bodies). She also had human faces on animals which reminded of an artist my father went to see who had these really creepy but beautiful sculptures and photographs. My favorite was the one with the octopus and the owl's. It was themed in blues. I was fascinated by the words, I thought they were really spacey and reflected the rest page really well. I also liked how they weren't all even and the same size. I liked how they were kind of messy. I thought the octopus was really cool, it was just an awesome focal point. I know it is really late but hopefully I can score half credit.

  40. I like Karen Whimsey and Teesha Moore, but I decided to go with the one that had more emotion and such in it. I decided on Karen Whimsy, because you can actually pretty much see how she feels and how she pours her soul into it. If you can't oh well. I also like how she uses the words that are in the book itself and uses them to her advantage of what she is creating. I liked "The Gift', because it portrays how it hurt to see her mother slowly lose her memory and then lose her. I also liked "Sea Dreams", because I love the sea and ocean. They are calming, and I like the way she uses the mermaids as "characters" to match the background. At first glance, the cover of "Sea Dreams" seems nearly plain and simple. Okay, maybe not plain, but not extravagant. I like how she makes the cover, and it feels as though- I know it was probably very very hard to do, and I couldn't do as great as her- it was like a dream with no effort in it. I also like how there is a hole cut on the cover with the mermaids face showing and then when you open the book she's there fully.
Thank you Mr. Sacco, I am really enjoying this class!
    P.S.
I can really see why and how Karen Whimsy seems to have won the heart of most of the students.

  41. I really liked how in the altered book “The Art of Happiness”, she used words from the page to make her own quotes to add to the design. I also loved how she used warm colors in most of her book, and mostly used paint to draw her pictures. I thought that the whole concept of the book was very creative, and original. She inspired me to try to look through the altered book I’m working on to try to make quotes out of the words in my book.

  42. In the journal made by Tracy Moore I loved the cover and the back of the journal. Not a speak on the cover which I like and sorda like a 3D thing going on with the bubbles. One other page was the one where there is the moving head. The head is defiantly the shout because everything else on the page is speaks and like back round elements. Since there is not a lot of color it makes the brownish head pop out.

  43. I thought that the journal by Tracy Moore was definitely the most interesting. I really liked how she incorporated such a wide variety of bright colors into her art work. I also thought that her use of pictures and collages was very creative, especially when she would use different pictures to make someone's face but make the features different sizes so they weren't proportional. An example is when she made the eyes two different sizes on one of the pages in her journal. Lastly, I thought the artist's use of text in her artwork was very inspirational and I am absolutely planning on using different quotes in my altered book after seeing this journal. :)

  44. I like Teesha Moore's altered book. She puts her self in her own works of art. It was a little scary though. She also had words in most of her pictures. She use brillante colurs.
