Before you start to create your altered book it's a good idea to see some work done by professional Altered book and Visual Journal artists. You should look at all three artists first. Next, decide which one you would like to write about.
Write at least a pargraph response about one of the artist's work. You may talk about their work as a whole or a specific book or page. Remember to use "artspeak". Talk about color, shape, texture, line, and how the artist used these elements of art to make something interesting.
This assignment is due Friday, February 11th.

I thought that the journal by Tracy Moore was definitely the most interesting. I really liked how she incorporated such a wide variety of bright colors into her art work. I also thought that her use of pictures and collages was very creative, especially when she would use different pictures to make someone's face but make the features different sizes so they weren't proportional. An example is when she made the eyes two different sizes on one of the pages in her journal. Lastly, I thought the artist's use of text in her artwork was very inspirational and I am absolutely planning on using different quotes in my altered book after seeing this journal. :)

I thought the altered book journal: The Art of Happiness written by John Cowper Powys and altered by Karen Hatzigeorgiou was my favorite out of all of the entries. She used the brightest colors which really caught my attention. Also, every thing looks free-sketched but is very detailed which i liked. She incorporated nature into alot of her work which tied most of the pages together. Each page is completely different from the next, but similar in the same way. I am definitely going to us The Art of Happiness as an inspiration for my altered book.

My favorite altered book is The Astronomer's Apothecary by Karen Whimsey. I enjoy the different variants of blue used throughout the spread in what almost seems to be a value scale in the background. The objects she used in the book gave the piece a nice 3D texture and made it really pop. What really catches my attention is the picture of the girl with the moon and the bottles in the niche. The tags hanging off the book also seem to be a nice touch. The spread has a light, dreamy feel that is very calming.

I think that Teesha Moore's altered book has an interesting array of colours. I also like how she uses different textures in her work along with the words in the book that appear in the backgrounds. Despite the fact that the faces and related stuff is somewhat scary.

I liked Dan Eldon’s journal the best because I thought it was the most interesting. Each entry seemed to tell a different story while using little to no words. I also loved how he used photographs and collaged them with his own paintings. Hos artwork clearly expressed true emotion and resembled dramatic experiences in his life. His work has definitely inspired me for great ideas to use in my altered book

I like Teesha Moore's altered book. She puts her self in her own works of art. It was a little scary though. She also had words in most of her pictures. She use brillante colurs.

I enjoyed Karen Whimsey's the Art of Happiness Altered book. I thought it was clever how she not only used the words in the book as her background. She used the text to her advantage incorporating it into her central theme: Happiness, What is it?, How does it make us feel? How we achieve it, etc. Whimsey highlights key words and phrases forming sentences that relate to the theme. The end product of each spread has an almost poetic feel to it. It amazes me though how she's able to make the book, itself, work WITH her; it seems as if she almost already knew ahead the idea she wanted to share ahead of time in the way that she's able to find every word she needs in those 2 pages.

I liked the altered poetry book by Karen Whimsey the best, it was a creative idea. I liked how she incorporated the words of the poem into the spread. The picture around it made you feel like you where in the garden as well and it clearly related to it. The edges of the pages were unique and created the feeling of looking through a window into the garden that the poem speaks about. This book is an inspiration and is a good idea of incororating words into the page and i may want to use that in the future.

I really like Teesha Moore's journal entries. I like how she is capable of incorporating so many colors in to one drawing. When she puts all the different colors in, you can see that she does'nt just put them in randomly; With most of her work, she usually uses the same colors all over the painting or uses warm colors or cool colors. I think that's good because it helps keep her work organized.
