More artists to look at this week. Look at all the artists then write a response (minimum 1 paragraph) about a specific piece of artwork.
Think about the design principle called Emphasis. How does the artist create a center of interest (Shout) or emphasis? Hint: Contrast is key!!!
This assignment is due Friday, March 4th.

Out of the four artists different works, my favorite were Karen Michel and Virginia Simpson Magruder because they used bright colors in their books. I liked Tracy Moore and Jeanne Minnix's use of 3-D objects, but they used mostly silvers and greys, and I like the colors better. Also, I thought that Virginia Simpson Magruder's theme of stars and dreams unified her book and gave it a soft look. All of these spreads will help me to make my altered book better.

I chose Virginia Simpson-Magruder's Spread book. In order to convey her "Shout" elements she used different layering techniques making her "Shout" element the top layer, allowing it to pop and gain more attention by the observer than the underlying details. In some cases she created a sort of frame with her element in the center making it the focus--allowing for most of the attention to be drawn to that area. For example, her last spread the "Shout" element is the eyes; you can tell because that's the main object and she created a border around it that almost becomes a frame for the focal point.

I chose Tracvy Moore's altered book. For shout elements, Tracy Moore used bold faces and bright colors. For spreads that were black and white, Tracy made the whisper elements tighter together, darker, and smaller. Most of Tracy's shout elements are pictures in front of dark text. This makes the shout element really pop and stand out. She uses contrasts between dark and light, black/white and color, and small and big to create shout elements. I like that she also created a shout element that moved along a string in one of her spreads. In this spread, you can tell that the moving face is the focus of the spread many ways. First, it can move. It is also very dark colors compared to the background/whisper elements that are black and white. It is also much bigger than anything else in the spread.

I really liked Virginia Simpson Magruder's book the best out of all of the artist's books because I thought that her's was the most interesting. I noticed that although all of her pages were different, they all incorporated some of the soft green or yellow colors which kind of gave the book a theme. She used different techniques to make one element stand out. My favorite was the page where the birds were the shout element. I liked that they weren't placed flat on the page so they were kind of 3D but they didn't have to be bright or obvious to be the focal point.

Virginia Simpson-Magruder creates her "shouts" using various techniques. One technique is she layers all the elements of the spread and makes the "shout" on the top. She also seems to like to use vibrant colors and the "shout" always seems to stand out slightly in its color scheme from the rest of the spread. In the second spread, the picture of the woman has a slightly teal scheme while the rest of the spread is mostly made up of greens. The contrast makes the "shout" stand out.

I liked Tracy Moore the best because all of her entries were very different but there was a sense of unification with her black ink drawings. I also like her use of words as "whisper" elements. Any colorful drawings she put in were very bright and stood out well. These would become the "shout" elements of the spread. All of her spreads involved a creepy theme because she used interesting faces and objects. My favorite spread was the one with the moveable mask. I thought that was very interesting and creative.

The artist that caught my eye was Tracy Moore. The spred that i liked of hers was the one with the movable face on the white backround. I think that the face is the focal point because it is is the only color on the page and in moves. I like how the face covers the other peoples faces to make it part of them.

The artist that I chose was Tracy Moore. The spred of her's that I liked was the one with the shark. I think that the focal point was the shark. I liked it because the shark looks so real, as does the water. The other thing I liked about it is the black and white elements underneath the picture of the shark itself.
