Two more journal artists to look at this week. Look at both artists then write a response (minimum 1 paragraph) comparing the two artists.
Please talk about the similiarities and differences you see. Remember to discuss the Elements of Art: line, shape, color, value, and texture and where they're used. Also think about the design principle called Emphasis. How does each artist create a center of interest (Shout) or emphasis?

Karen Michel seems to use alot more different colors. She uses photographs in her work, which adds interest. Her words also add interest. Her journal seems to have an entry that has meaning to it. Power and structure.
ReplyDeleteTracy Moore had more of a certain style, like Egyptian. It was funky, unusual, creative. It has a lot of black and white lettering and some entries contain large focal points. Also, a lot of her entries incorporated some sort of face or something that appeared to look like a human face. I liked both of the artists over-all styles, but i think that Karen Michels was more of my style. But both artists had elements I would want to us in my journal.

I liked both the artist's journals. They both used a larger amount of living things than most of the journals I've seen. The differences between these journals is that Tracy Moore used more whisper elements, she used words to surround her art while Karen didn't really use any words to surround her with the exception of a few pieces. All together I really liked Tracy's because she used all of the page and even used three dimensions on the cover and in the book itself. - Marc Dalrymple
ReplyDeleteFirst, I thought Tracey’s journal was really good because she was able to pages of just black and white while making it interesting still. Instead of color contrasts, her main speak elements were bolder or different font styles. Her journal was also interesting because their was constant movement on her page. Aside from the main focal point, she used massive amounts of writing around the page to express her points and add whisper elements. Overall though, her journal was really strong but really scared me. She had a lot of sharp lines, creepy pictures, and sketchy words and quotes. And although strange, moreover themes were secretly incorporated into each entry.
ReplyDeleteKaren’s journal was so different from Tracey’s. To begin with, Karen’s main focal points stood out because they were colorful and often a different material from the rest of the page. The main thing that stood out to me in her journal was the use of pasting in outside materials inside her journal. Additionally, one thing I liked was how she had a few simple journal entries; they still looked great even though they weren’t very busy. Something else I notices was that her page backgrounds looked very realistic; there was little details, stray marks, and color patches that made it look interesting or realistic. Unlike Tracey’s she also didn’t use a lot of words and her elements all contrasted through mediums, and layers of pasting in. I also noticed that both journals use dreary grey verse brighter colors to show contrast.
The two artists are similar because they like to use animals, faces and also a lot of writing in their art. Both artists like to put the subject right in the middle of the painting. They also like to use old-fashioned things in their drawings. Tracy Moore likes to use a lot of things related to the sea. She also likes to use a lot of brass and nubs. Karen Michel uses a lot of bright colors. It seems Karen's drawings are happier than Tracy's. They include some mother and child pictures and pictures of her homes. Some of Tracy's pictures are scary and unpleasant, like a bad dream. Both artists use lines while Tracy likes to use a lot more swirls.

Karen uses more color in her journals. Tracy repetitively is using black and white or duller colors but also uses a burst of flashy colors to describe a center of interest. Both artists uses contrast to emphasize a shout element but Tracy also uses big drawings or pictures that are the same color as the rest of the page to be a shout element. Moore also uses many words on her pages repeatedly. Karen doesn’t display the use of words as much as Tracy does. Tracy’s work is made of outrages shapes and designs, like Karen’s. Karen also used water color in every entry. Tracy uses a lot of pen, pencil, and graphite. Tracy also uses more photos in her entries; Karen does use some photos but not as many as Moore.

Tracy Moore’s and Karen Michel’s artwork have some similarities, but have numerous notable differences. They both focus on texture and patterns. Both artists have a way of creating a center of interest, which makes their work interesting and appealing to the eye.
ReplyDeleteTracy Moore puts a lot of detail into people’s faces. I also noticed that she uses the crosshatch technique in some of her entries. She seems to focus on the details and shapes. I also found it interesting how there were words in the background, which told some kind of story. She also uses photographs. Tracy makes her focal point big and very noticeable, with other elements surrounding it.
Karen Michel likes to use fabrics in her artwork, in the way that she cuts them out and glues it on paper to form a picture. She really likes to focus on color. She also draws attention to a focal point, which contrasts with the background. She pays attention to values and puts bright colors against cool colors which make objects ‘pop’.
Both artists-Tracy Moore and Karen Michel have highly distinctive, exciting artwork.

Both artists had a large variety of styles. Karen seemed to use cloth and sequins, or beads very often, while Tracy used leather a lot. The bead's in Karen's work are usually the whisper and are not noticed first. Karen's art is a lot more colorful than Tracy's. Because of this, Karen usually has a brown or rusty-orange color.
ReplyDeleteTracy uses browns or greys. The colorful objects in Karen's entries are the the focal points, in my opinion. Tracy uses many curved lines, or swirls and Karen used straigt lines more often. They also seem to like stitching. The stitches were one of the first things I noticed in all of their entries, most likely because of the bright colors in Karen's case, or the thickness in Tracy's case. Overall, their journal pages were all very different, but their few similarites were very obvious.

I couldn't really decide which journal I liked better. Tracy Moore's journal gave kind of an eerie feeling, while Karen Michel's journal gave more of a warm, kinder feeling. I liked all the whisper elements that Tracy used and I liked all of the vibrant colors used by Karen. Karen seemed to use fabrics and beads and not just pencils and pens which I liked. I really liked how Tracy's work usually had a focal point which words in the background.
ReplyDeleteOverall both journals had things that stood out for the both of them and were both very interesting.

ReplyDeleteOut of these two artists, I have to say I admire Tracy Moore's style of her artwork. Though about half of her pieces are black and white, I feel an almost creepy aura from the way crooked words play in the background and pops of random figures that, to me, seem like the background and the words appear to be the focal point. Karen Michel's artwork gives off a warmer, more sensitive feeling. She uses materials like sequins, stitches, watercolor, metal, felt, with lots of color. Her lines are usually curvy and extended, while Tracy usually sticks with straight, rigid lines. Both of these two artists have a unique appeal to them, which identify themselves to viewers
Both journalists had interesting journals. I think Tracey Moore did well working with the black and white. She made some of the black color on her paper stand out than others. She uses a lot of writing in her backgrounds which is great whisper element. She gives her whisper elements shape and she even put the whisper elements inside a drawing. Unlike Tracey, Karen Michel doesn’t use that many whisper elements. Her journals are more simple. Karen uses inkjet transfers as her background in some of her entries and those inkjet transfers are her whisper elements. One thing I find interesting about Karen is that she makes half of a drawing look realistic and half of it doesn’t look realistic. If I had to choose which journal I like more I would say I like Karen Michel because her journal is more colorful while Tracey uses a lot of black and white.

Tracy Moore used a lot of graphite and ink based drawings- she hardly ever uses color. When she does add color, she doesn’t make a big deal out of it; she uses light pastel tones, even when she uses warm colors, they don’t stand out. She adds a lot of words, and doodles; always having one doodle bigger than the rest- her shout element. In some entries, she uses photos, and it feels like a scrapbook entry, but it always still has side notes with her usual style content. I like her style, because it looks very free- like she doesn’t plan so much; like she sort of just draws.
ReplyDeleteKaren Michel uses a lot of sun/desert-y type colors. Like yellows and reds, with mixtures of other light tones. Colors and designs you would usually find in a Mexican art museum. I think one of the entries actually has a bit of Spanish in it; “La Muerte” I think, meaning “Death.” I think they’re very dramatic but calm- hard to explain but I think it sort of makes sense. I don’t like her style as much as Tracy Moore, but it's still very nice.

I like the way that Tracey Moore on her cover she made it 3D. she used leather to add great texture. I also like they way that she made those silver ball on her cover which added even more texture. Inside her book she used a lot of words to fill the page. She mostly did her entries in black and white. She also used different languages or symbols in one entry. A lot of her entries are mysterious which makes you think a little. She used pictures which was a good technique and she used different materials in some entr4ies.
ReplyDeleteIn Karen Michel’s book she used a lot of materials such as other paper and clothes. She sowed some fabric in her journal which gave they eye something to see . she used words in entries and she used watercolors to give a little pop.

I liked how karen used three d elements in her art work because it really showed she had skill and thought out he work thouroghly. Tracy used alot less color then karen but her journals were more interestion in my eyes. that is because i like grafite work she used and all of the text included in her work. they are both excellent artist and i enjoyed doing this blog.

I think of the two journals I preferred Tracy Moore’s because most of her entries were made with just the use of a pen, but by making them very detailed and have interesting focal points they still attracted your attention. I also like her journal entries because the images on them are beautiful, yet almost disturbing in a way. Karen Michel used a lot of colors and different mediums in her journals. She often mixes her painting and drawings with photographs or other things like ticket stubs or maps. She utilizes the colors and shapes in her work to create flow through her art. Something else I think created flow for me was the fairy tale/Alice and wonderland quality her journals seem to take on. What I think give her journals this quality was the use of keys, wings, people, moons, etc. and creating a mixture of them that gave off a surrealistic feeling. Over all I think both journals are amazingly beautiful pieces of art.
