Two more journal artists to look at this week. Look at both artists then write a response (minimum 1 paragraph) comparing and contrasting the two artists. You may use specific pages from each artists or speak about their work as a whole.
Please talk about the similiarities and differences you see. Remember to discuss the Elements of Art: line, shape, color, value, and texture and where they're used. Also think about the design principle called Emphasis. How does each artist create a center of interest (Shout) or emphasis?
This assignment is due Tuesday, November 24th.

Tracy Moore’s journal entries use a small variety of color compared to Karen Michel’s entries. Tracy Moore uses size to create her focal points. Most of Tracy Moore’s focal points are the same color as the surrounding objects, so the artist uses size by enlarging the focal points to help them standout more. On the other hand, Karen Michel uses a contrast in color in most of their entries to create a focal point. Tracy Moore uses the element of art, line a lot. The shading that was used in most of their journals uses lines in mostly black and white, as well as use words to fill space and make the entry more pleasing to the eye. Tracy Moore’s journals give the viewer a sense of distress and uneasiness because of the words used and the figures drawn. As opposed to Karen Michel, they use an element of shape to create their journal, along with a variety of colors. The figures drawn and the colors used give the viewer a sense of happiness and relaxation in most journals. Both artists overall use an element of texture throughout their pieces and journals.

I chose to do my assignment on the last of Tracy Moore's journal pages because I liked all the components of this piece. One of my favorite parts was the mask that moves across the page. The mask is the focal point of this journal page for many reasons. It captures your attention because it is the only part of the page that has color; in addition, it can be moved across the page. I also found it interesting how, when the mask was moved, it would cover up one of the faces on the page. I felt that this placement adds another layer of depth and emotion to the piece as a whole.

Tracy Moore seems to use a lot of text, like paragraphs and scribbles to fill space and areas. She also has a lot of weird faces but their well-drawn with shading to support face contouring and shapes. She uses a lot of black white colors and weird, eye catching pieces and shapes. Shell occasionally use color to make things stand out and equalize pages. I often see her name and random words or quotes. One entry had something she was doing like a diary entry. There are so many cool, different shapes, lines and faces that draw your eyes across the page.
ReplyDeleteKaren Michel uses more color and uses a lot of magazine type things and pictures. She also uses a lot of different materials like button and things that cause texture to the page. It seems she likes to use stuff like tickets and patterns. Stuff that would normally get thrown away gets put to use to make something beautiful. Like on her front cover, it seems she has used a plastic bag to make the cover look artsy and rustic. She’s similar in that she also draws faces like Tracy. It also seems she used a lot of different materials or textures to make simple things more interesting. I noticed she likes to use thread, as I saw it repeated on the cover and in some entries. Both seem to take simple things and twist them around and effortlessly make you look at a page for a while, to really notice and capture each detail.

Tracy Moore and Karen Michel have two different styles. Tracy Moore has more complex journals entries. She draws many faces and uses words to fill up the page. She uses lots of black and whites. Karen Michel has very simple pages that almost seem incomplete. Her pages are very colorful and each has its own texture like tinfoil. But, they both contain real pictures and they both draw real objects, like faces and animals. In Tracy Moore's entries, it's sometimes hard to tell what's her focal point. Most of the time its colorful compared to the background and its big, right in the middle. In Michel's pages, the focal point is something of different texture or color. -Denise Lai
ReplyDeleteKaren Michel and Tracy Moore are both talented journal artists with key similarities--and differences--between their work. For instance, both artists use words in their backgrounds, though Tracy Moore does this much more often. Also, they both use a combination of curved, straight, thick, and thin lines to make their artwork interesting, along with a combination of different shapes. Additionally, they both find ways to emphasize their focal point; however, the ways in which they do this are very distinct, as Karen Michel prefers to do this by making her focal point larger, while Tracy Moore tends to use color, since most of her pages are black and white. These artists also differ in that Tracy Moore usually uses darker values, while Michel uses light values. In short, while Karen Michel and Tracy Moore use some similar techniques, they have two different and unique styles that make their work stand out.

After looking at the works of both Tracy Moore and Karen Michel, one can come to the conclusion that both of these artists are tremendously talented. However, many similarities and difference occur in their art and their journals. One of the first things that I noticed was the color scheme that each of them used. I saw that Tracy Moore used more monochromatic colors; often opting for shades of white, black, and gray, rather than other colors. Where she used color, it was usually only in a few entries, with a splash of color here and there. She also used color against a black and white background to create a focal point or “shout” aspect. For example, in her 3rd to last entry, she has a white background with intricate writing and designs in black, and uses vibrant colors to create a focal point of a person’s face. In this abstract face, she used predominantly green and blue tones accented by reds to emphasize her focal point. In comparison, I saw that Karen Michel mainly used different colors in most of her entries, while very rarely going with a completely black and white theme. Another difference I noticed in the artwork was that Tracy often used a lot of writing in her pieces, while Karen used words very scarcely, and if she did include them, it was only one or two words. Also, Karen also used more collage items in her entries than Tracy. Despite these differences, I did notice some similarities such as both of them having a lot of detailed and intricate work. They both also had reoccurring shapes in the journals such as faces or birds which made them more cohesive. All in all there are many similarities and differences between these two artists.

From the journals by Tracy Moore and Karen Mitchell I chose the to focus on two journal pages with a very strong focal point that were quite similar. The one by Tracy Moore is the first page of her journal. It depicts a strange human/fish like creature. This creature is the obvious focal point and is big and bright, the colors contrasting and complementing each other. The creature is quite peculiar with fiery hair, big goggles, a beak looking mouth, and webbed hands. There are lots of patterns on the creature and I he background is a like green with bubbles every where.
ReplyDeleteThe second entry by Karen Mitchell is less odd and easier to take in. It has an Asian vibe and the focal point is a woman with several arms sitting on a pink flower. It is similar in that the focal point is large, colorful, and odd. The background of this entry is plain like the other entry, with some texture at the bottom. Although these entry's are similar there are also many differences. For example in the first entry the creature looks almost surprised or maybe board. In the other entry the woman looks serene and peaceful. They are also in different styles the first one being more abstract and the second more realistic.

I found that the journal entries by Tracy Moore are much odder and much more abstract. She uses many rather off-putting faces, with a medium that looks like pen. Her characters are very unique, almost demonic, and she often makes those characters her focal point in her entries. She also uses text as a "whisper" element in a large majority of her entries.
ReplyDeleteKaren Mitchell, on the other hand, has less demonic art. She uses vibrant colors and uses many organic creatures as her focal point, such as people and birds. Though it is less "demonic", it is abstract nevertheless. The uses very vibrant colors in the background especially, with a "smudged" feel. There is a lot of variation in her artwork as well, experimenting with very different focal points and themes.

Tracy Moore and Karen Michel obviously have very different styles. For the Tracy Moore journal entry that I chose, a droid-like face, in the style of expressionism, goes across the page from the bottom right to the center. The rest is filled with Sharpied words. For Karen Michel, I chose an entry with what appears to be a watercolored purple background and a moon in the center that looks like metal. These two contrast greatly. In one, the background is filled up by blank page and words. The other is filled by a soft purple color like night. However, Moore's face is absolutely stunning from the use of contrasting colors and words on the face. She also uses many different mediums in a small area. Lastly, the face is geometrically symmetrical but the colors and style are not. On the other hand, Michel's journal has more color in the background and not the center, but the focus, or center, stands out because of that fact. The purple is clearly made out of many different shades blue and red and the bottom has a "whisper" element with the skyline of a city. "Medium" ground items are the stars around it. It is composed very nicely and comes together well but is not as versatile as Moore's entry. Overall, I really like them both even though they have very different styles and portray very different ideas.

I chose to talk about Tracy moore's entry on page forty. Just like all of her other entries, it is filled with unclear writing. This aspect of this (and all of her other drawings) adds to the look of each entry, making them look much more exciting by acting as a unique background. The figure in the center acts as a focal point by being the only colored thing in the entry. It is made interesting by two factors: Its interesting coloration and contradicting nature. Its coloration is interesting because of how each piece of its face is colored differently. It is also shaded a little bit, giving it living vibe. The other point of interest is its nature. The face looks mythical and ritualistic with its unusual symbols, yet the writing on it is referring to science with the lips saying "science is bliss". Because of this I particularly liked this entry.

Overall, there are some differences between Tracy Moore’s and Karen Michel’s journals. After viewing Moore’s journals, I observed a limited use of colors, as the appearance was dull. Instead she focuses on intricate details and is a very meticulous artist. In contrast, Karen Michel’s journals display a wide variety of colors, as they are vibrant. She focuses slightly less on detail and incorporates text and larger objects.

Tracy Moore and Karen Michel created interesting journal pages that share similarities as well as differences; I compared select works from their journals. Both artists used emphasis to create a focal point that draws the attention of the viewer. Michel's focal point is starkly white that contrasts greatly with the surrounding darker hues. Moore creates focal point by coloring only one section of the page, and filling the surroundings with words. Contrasting values are heavily used by both artists; Michel juxtaposes a bright white moon next to a darker night sky. Moore used color sparingly, but when she did she contrasted warm and cool colors to create a vibrant piece. Michel's shapes are simple (such as a crescent moon, or rectangular/triangular houses). Moore has a very detailed face in the center of her page, and the rest is just text. The text in her work can be viewed as sorts of "lines" connecting various parts of her journal horizontally. Michel relies more on color to unite her work. I thought that Moore's journal page had no perceivable texture because it is largely words. Michel's art, on the other hand, has a smooth texture in the sky and a metallic texture over the moon.

I chose to compare two pages from Tracey Moore and Karen Michel's art. In Tracey Moore's art piece (page 40, "science is bliss") she uses messy lettering as a background, as it doesn't attract the eye. There isn't much middle ground, but the tank at the top right corner could be considered middle ground because it is bigger, and it stands out a bit more than the background. She uses bright colors to make the focal point stand out, along with size and placement. The focal point draws the eye because of the contrast of a plain background with bright colors, and also the 3d quality of the focal point compared to the 2d background. Karen Michel, like Tracey Moore's piece (second to last page, heart with blue sky and clouds), uses drab background, but she uses plain colors instead of handwriting. The heart stands out as a middle ground because it has intricate designs. The focal point of blue sky with white clouds attracts the eye because of the contrast of bright, saturated colors against plain background.

I liked Karen Michel's journals more than Tracy Moore. Her journals are more colorful and has different types of materials in it to make it look more creative. I liked the Moon journal the most because it had a nice focal point and the background blended together really well. What made the moon stand out was that it looked like it was made out of metal scraps, it was a different color, and it it was bigger than everything else. What Tracy did that was different than Karen’s was that most of her artworks had little to no color with the exception of a small handful. The one that I found the most interesting was on the bottom row and number two counting from the left. There was a lot of coloring on the focal point so it made it stand out due to the black and white background.
