Two more journal artists to look at this week. Look at both artists then write a response (minimum 1 paragraph) comparing and contrasting the two artists. You may use specific pages from each artists or speak about their work as a whole.

Please talk about the similiarities and differences you see. Remember to discuss the Elements of Art: line, shape, color, value, and texture and where they're used. Also think about the design principle called Emphasis. How does each artist create a center of interest (Shout) or emphasis?

This assignment is due Wednesday, March 20th.

  1. Tracy Moore and Karen Michel each show their own unique style in their journals, which are extremely different from one another. Their overall moods also contrasted with one another, with Karen Michel's journal being happy and Tracy Moore's being dark and slightly creepy. Tracy Moore filled her journal with bizarre, unusual creatures, and uses a lot of black and white, which makes her colorful pages stand out. There was one page that had 5 rhinoceroses but if you turned your head, they looked like birds, and it was really weird and interesting and I liked it a lot. Karen Michel's journal was extremely colorful, and she used birds in a lot of entries. I liked how she collaged a variety of mediums together, which give her pages texture and character. Tracy Moore and Karen Michel both incorporate photographs into a lot of their journal entries. They also both use text as middle-ground elements, but Tracy Moore often uses words as background as well, while Karen Michel sometimes uses words as focal points. Tracy Moore often has more than one focal point, which she makes stand out by using emphasis by contrast of color against black and white and emphasis by size, by making the focal point the biggest object. In one entry the focal point was even emphasized by having it move across the page. Karen Michel used many different techniques to make her focal point stand out, including emphasis by isolation, size, color vs. black/white, warm vs. cool colors, and a lot of emphasis by texture.

  2. The two journal artists Karen Michel and Tracy Moore are both similar and different in their uses of color, line, value, shape, and texture. Moore and Michel also are alike and different in terms of emphasis. One way Tracy Moore is different from Karen Michel is in color. Most of Moore’s pages are made up of mostly neutral colors (browns, whites, grays, and blacks) in the background and the focus object is colorful to chow contrast. Karen Michel however has pages bursting with several colors and usually makes focal point, a neutral color or warm if the background colors are cool (or vise versa). Another way the artists differ from each other is in texture; Tracy Moore tends to use mostly pens photographs and collage elements in his journal, whereas Karen Michel uses, paints, fabrics, colored pencils, water color, collage elements, and photographs in hers. Although the two artists contrast from one another, they have similarities in their work as well. One way in which the artists are alike is that sometimes they both use words on their pages. Usually they write about their lives or lives of others; occasionally using labels that tie in with these messages. They also both repeat elements through their works and use patterns of line designs and shapes. For example, both artists have a certain page that is similar; they each have a page with a drawing of a hand with an eye in the center. In Moore’s entry he has a row of seven of these hands, repeating with a color pattern, on the edge of the page; he also repeats the hand element throughout the page. Michel’s entry has a single hand with an eye in the center of it as the focal point of the page; she demonstrates repetition with this as well by having the word “vision” written at the bottom of the page, continuing the theme of the eye. Overall the two journal artists Karen Michel and Tracy Moore are both similar and different in their uses of color, line, value, shape, and texture as well as their use of the design principle called Emphasis.

  3. Tracy Moore and Karen Michel each come up with distinctive andd specific ideas which draw me in to take a closer look. They both create entirely different moods which I notice immediately while looking at thir journals. Moore's journal is eerie and scary, often utilizing black and white which brings strong emphasis to her focal ponts. She also uses unusual and irregular shapes in her sketches, adding to the disturbing mood. Moore includes photographs in her entries, which are mostly in color, and contrast greatly with the black and white background for further emphasis. Karen Michel's work is extremely different from that of the other artist. Michel's journal is happy and joyful. It looks like she expresses her sunny inner feelings in her visual journal. She includes a lot of birds such as owls, crows, but also multiple colorful birds. I especially like the entries where she uses fabric to sew into the journal. I thought her use of different materials and fabrics is fascinating to look at because it creates interesting textures. Both artists use different techniques to make the page "pop." Moore usually deals with dark and cool colors while Michel uses different varieties of colors, mostly warm colors. Michel's pages are often framed with clean lines to bring emphasis to a large central focal pont, even using a ruler in one entry to frame the focal point of a bright fabric bird. Words are a big part of the background of Moore's works, which surround either a single large focal point or multiple smaller focal points. I truly enjoyed looking at both their interesting journal pages.

  4. Tracy Moore and Karen Michel's journals were fascinating, in that you could really see the different styles and techniques that enabled their artwork to be memorable and create impressions. Tracy Moore used many words and a mainly black and white color scheme to portray sadness or darkness, as well as many disfigured faces and heads in her artwork. The lettering she used provides visual elements to her pieces, either leading the eye to or drawing the eye from the other elements on the page. The faces Moore used in her artwork are very contrasting components to the harsh or angular letters in many of her pieces, as they are more organic shapes. Tracy Moore, while mainly using black and white, did use color in the form ofphotographs or just hand drawn items, which gave her greater contrast amid the black and whites of her other pages. Moore's style used many value differences in the blacks and whites to show light and texture, which incorporated cross-hatching and other shading techniques. Karen Michel, on the other hand, had an entirely different style. She used lots of color in her pieces, and had an entirely different mood to her overall work. Michel's journal expressed inner peace and joy, as well as her technical abilities. Karen Michel used texture in the felts and other materials to draw attention to and place emphasis on certain focal points in her pieces. She incorporated many birds like doves or owls and crows into her art, to symbolize peace or knowledge or death and rebirth, as well as butterflies and skulls. Karen Michel included some faces and human figures amid the organic shapes in many of her pieces to gain a sort of flow throughout the whole. Michel also used linear elements to give some of her artwork bold contrast to their softer surroundings. These two very different artists incorporated many similar techniques to create their contrasting artworks in memorable fashions.

  5. Both artists have a rather organic style of drawing, and both do a great deal of collaging, however Ms. Moore uses a substantial amount of writing and detail, while refraining from using too much color. Her artwork is typically black and white, but the details and writing she has in the book can make up for that, creating a more simplistic yet intricate design pattern. Ms. Michel on the other hand uses a lot of color, and also draws by using more geo-organic shapes, creating a feel of collaging without using different mediums. Ms. Moore tends to have a reoccurring theme, a sort of tribal theme that is portrayed through designs and people, such as the tiki head entry, however Ms. Michel uses a theme that is almost like framing the picture; she puts a border around the initial focal point, and uses it to support the focal point.

  6. The work of Tracy Moore and Karen Michel are very different in several ways. To begin with, Tracy Moore uses mainly black and white lettering and sketching, whereas Karen Michel uses a variety of bright colors that pop to the eye. This creates a very different mood in each journal, since the black and white leads to a subdued, eerie mood very different from that of the energetic mood of Karen's journal. Additionally, Tracy Moore uses mainly paper collage such as photographs, and Karen Michel often uses several different media and 3D. Also, Karen Michel uses blocky, geometric shapes to divide up the page, as opposed to Tracy's use of more organic shapes. These differences all lead to differences in the way they emphasize the focal point as well. Tracy's use of mainly black & white makes colored centerpieces pop. Curved lines breaking the flow of her even lettering also contributes to this effect. Karen Michel, on the other hand, mainly emphasizes her focal points by placing them in a central location or by using size. She also uses textural differences to separate different parts of the page. Both artists had very interesting but work, in different ways.

  7. Both Tracy Moore and Karen Michel's journals were spectacular and very interesting to look at. Both journal entries used an immense amount of detail into each picture. Tracy Moore and Karen Michel used leading lines that drew your eye to something, usually its the focal point but not always. They both had strong obvious focal points , especially Karen Michel. the journals incorporated different textures and materials into their artwork to make it a more pleasing and interesting piece. For the focal points, both artists use different materials to really make the page come alive, such as newspaper, string, beads and felt. But they have some differences in their writing too. Karen michels style of artwork is very fun, spring-like and whimsical. AS for tracy moores work, which is a little on the darker side. I feel that tracy moore usued much more middle ground elements such as using words. As for Karen Michel, sje did not have as many middle ground elements, usually she just left the background blank. But overall, both artists used similar style techniques to make the entry a pleasing and interesting piece to look at.

  8. Both of the artists made interesting journals. They used skulls of faces many times to create focal points because that is a interesting shape for humans took look at being that we all have one. They both inserted text to add fun middle ground elements. There was also allot of different colors and shapes that all matched up with the focal points. Tracy moore drew more of her things in a more "ugly" style and gave more of a dark feel while Karen took photos and integrated them into her pieces. Aiden St. Clair

  9. Tracy Moore and Karen Michael are to entirely different journal artists. Tracy Moore uses a lot of contrast using back and white. She doesn't use much texture in her journal entries and they are mostly black pen and photographs. She creates an emphasis in her entries by writing words around a central object that is either a completely different color or is a great deal larger than the rest of the elements in the entry. Karen Michael uses a lot of textural elements in her entries as well as a lot of color. She creates interest in her focal point by placement and size. Like Tracy Moore, her focal points are generally centered and larger than the rest of the elements in the journal entry. As well as creating interest in their focal points in similar ways the two journal artists also have a single thought or idea that their entries are centered around.

  10. Both Tracy Moore and Karen Michel made interesting but different ways of approaching their journal. Michel's journal has more of a springy, pleasant feel to them. Where as the pages crafted by Tracy Moore are slightly dark and twisted. Tracy likes to use words, a lot, lot of words. However, there mainly used as background elements. Where Karen appeals to giving the words importance, having them stand out as focal lines. Another interesting to note that Moore's designs are all messy and overlapping. Karen's are neat, clean and organised. Her focal points are usually centered and isolated from the other elements. Tracy usually uses faces as focal points, but Karen tends to hearts, words and birds. Overall they created interesting focal points to observe in each entry.

  11. i liked both journals but they were very different. tracy moore used a lot of writing in her journals. she used words as the backgrounds of most of her journals. because of her use of words there is very little color in her journals. tracy journal is visually very interesting but much more simple than karen michael. karen michaels journal on the other hand is very colorful. karens journal has a lot more drawing than tracys. karen also use a lot of geometric shapes which acted as leading lines and drew your eye to her focal points. both artist journals were very interesting but different.

  12. The Journals from Tracy Moore and Karen Michel are similar but also different. What makes them different is the way they use color, value and texture. Karen Michel uses all different types of cool and warm colors. Where as, Tracy used very neutral colors. Tracy using a lot of pencil and collage but Karen uses all different elements to make the page come a live. They both have good focal points and good use of shapes and space. Both Karen Michel and Tracy Moore know what draws the eye.

  13. I think that both of the visual journalists, Tracy Moore and Karen Michel, have very appealing and creative pieces of art. One thing that they have in common is they both have strong focal points. For example, Tracy Moore's journal has an overall dark feeling with a pop of color, revealing the focal point. Karen Michel also had strong focal points. She incorporated many different mediums, which led to the focal point. Her focal points were big and catch your eye immediately. However, there are some differences between the two. First of all, Tracy Moore has some moving elements that make her journal very interesting. Karen Michel uses a lot of warm colors and there is not a lot of drawing involved.

  14. After looking through Tracy Moore and Karen Michel's journals I was truly amazed by their talent. Tracy Moore uses quotes and notes of what she's done and what seen in her entries to create a diary with crazy doodles and pictures feel. Karen incorporates words into her journals too, and they both have middle ground speak elements that help the main focal point pop. Tracy's black and white sketches and grungy old photographs create an eerie and dark mood in her entries. She strategically places each drawing and picture so that little to no white space is seen which makes each page eye catching. Karen's use of vibrant colors, busy backgrounds, patterns, and a prominent shout elements make her entries very appealing and interesting to look at. She also uses some beading and mixed mediums to create texture and interest. These artists are both alike and different in their creations and I enjoyed looking at their masterpieces.

  15. The style of Tracy Moore and Karen Michael is very different, both in the colors used in journal pages, and materials used as well. In most of Moore’s work, she uses a predominantly black and white palette, adding color occasionally to make a focal point. Moore also likes to use interestingly disfigured heads in her art, with them sometimes becoming the focal point, or falling back to become speak elements. Michael’s artwork, she uses a lot of dulled and pastel hues, (From what I could see), and likes to use altered photography and mixed media in her work. A page that I really liked from Tracy Moore’s collection was the one with a big colored head on a monotone lettered background. This page is quite interesting because of the main focal point, it catches your eye immediately, and the head is slightly disfigured, but you can still tell it is a stylized human head. The way the head in colored is also fascinating because it has interesting patterns painted on it, and it is shaded. The words on the head also do not take away from the overall image. Two words that caught my eye were on the lips, saying “silence, bliss”. The font of lettering used in the background and on the head is quite intriguing, and it is a interesting line as well. Another page that caught my eye from Moore included an interactive, moveable element. Moors creates emphasis in her artwork by using size or color to create a speak element. From Michaels, I liked a page that was one half an altered photograph, and one half either collage or her own drawing, making the page have interesting texture. The top is very pretty, the photo having that old look. The clouds in the photo are accented with white dots, and the word “pursuit” has been added to the lower left corner. The bottom has a mandala type collage element on it, and it also looks a little old. Michaels creates emphasis by using texture, and using cool colors if the background is warm, or warm colors when the background is cool. Also, if the background is colourful, she will use a neutral shout element. A difference between the two artists is that Moore uses mostly pens and photos in his journal, but Michaels uses a lot of multimedia.
