Welcome

Welcome to the PJG Studio Art Blog. You will need come here to complete some assignments. Please bookmark this page.

Before you start creating entries it's a good idea to see some work done by Visual Journal artists. You should look at both artists first. Next, decide which one you would like to write about.
Write at least a pargraph response about one of the artist's work. You may talk about their work as a whole or a specific page. Remember to use "artspeak". Talk about color, shape, texture, line, and how the artist used these elements of art to make something interesting. This assignment is due thursday, Sept. 19

  1. I chose Teesha Moore because I like the way she used text or free wrote on almost every page. I also like all of the different colors and patterns she uses on different pages of her journal; it really leads your eye to every single inch of each page. What is interesting about her journal is that the harder you look at a page, the more designs and colors you see. Also, I liked the way she put her feelings in text and her own comments about her journal, one example being: "Must I constantly fill every nook and cranny with art? why yes, I do, but I don't know why." as stated on her fourth to last page of the journal. I found that the contrast of the warm and cool colors either in the background or focal point made everything stand out more. -Aria Voli

  3. I liked Dan Eldon's work better because he used many different themes in his work. For example, in one of his pages he used a picture of superman and in another page he used pictures of fishes. I also liked how he would have a whole page of black and white and have a bright orange tiger on the side. Another thing I liked about his artwork was how he would have 2 of the exact same pictures on 2 different pages but change the colors. One last thing that I liked about his artwork was how he used pictures from what looked like a war.

  4. For this blog assignment, I have chosen to write abut Dan Eldon's NEw York and Beyond journal I found this journal to be very inspiring and full of culture from Africa and the Middle East. ONe work of art that I thought really stood out from the rest was the one on the second page because of the cool colors taht are used on the page, and the contrast of the white outlined figures. The figures made my eyes move from right to left on the page, creating movement. I found it interesting that when you look closely at the drawing, you can see the black apartment buildings of New York City. Lastly, Eldon's drawing showed radial balance. Many elements of art were shown and I can't wait to look up more of Eldon's drawings.

  5. I chose to write about Teesha Moore. I like the way she combines Surrealism, Pop Art and Abstract Expressionism to create a uniform design. Her use of complimentary colors makes her entries bright and vibrant. Her layouts are very detailed and fill the whole page that no matter where you look you will always find something new. I like the way she uses text to create pattern and texture. I love the way Teesha incorporates her views on life in her entries. One of my favorite is entry 37 where she states, "A single idea can transform a life, a business, a nation, a world. -Harmony Sesenton

  6. I decided to write about Teesha Moore because I liked the way she would make an entry with a picture of something and then she would make another entry with the same picture just zoomed in. I also liked how instead of having a darker background and a lighter central figure she often had a bright background with a dark center figure. I liked this because she thought outside of the box and kind of went against the grain. I also liked how not all of her entries looked alike. I liked how she would use different techniques, shapes and colors to change the feel of the entry.

  7. I enjoyed the visual journals of Dan Eldon. He seems particularly good at creating strong contrast, using bright colors on top of desaturated ones. His journal pages often feature shapes and drawings that invoke ethnic backgrounds. Photos are used too. A major feature of his books are the presence of a captivating focal point, and the creation of a mood or atmosphere. Some of the art is reminiscent of grafitti, which calls to mind New York (as the title of the journal.). -Ellie Buscemi

  8. I chose to write about Teesha Moore’s work. What drew me to her work was her distinct style. Each piece of her work possesses originality, but what really makes me applaud her is how she can create a piece of art that is more unique than the one before. Yet you could easily recognize any one of her pieces by the voice she has in her work. What I feel that makes her work have that signature quality that is her own, is her use of words, faces and variation of tones. In some pieces I noticed she will create a focal point using a face. Even though the face is a recurring concept she can differentiate each one. For example one face could be elongated and surrealistic and another could be life like and photo realistic. Which brings me back to the concept of having a recognizable style, or in other words your own “voice” as I mentioned. In my mind having a bit of repetition and that personal touch in art creates you as a developed artistic individual. - Josephine Elliott

  9. For this blog assignment I chose Teesha Moore because i loved how colorful her work is. Everything is really bright and eye catching. I love the way she arranges everything on each of her pages, its easy to get lost in each page; its like you look at each page and you cant help but wonder what she was thinking about when she crated and designed each one.I love the way she filled in most of the spaces in her pages with writing and key words she was thinking. Teesha took plain simple magazine pictures and put a spin to them making them crazy and unique, everything just connects together in a weird twisted way. - Issy Brand

  10. I chose to write about Dan Elden's journals, specifically, the New York journal. I liked the diversity of his work. It reminded me of the 60's and 70's because of his use of comic book images like superman and other pop culture references. I also liked his use of layering with black and white photos that he added layers of transparent paint and other media.

  11. Teesha Moore's forty first entry spoke to me the most as I looked over both her journal and Dan Eldon's. The first noticed part of the page was the owl's eyes, with the golden coloration of the iris standing out vividly against the darker colors of the page. And the longer I looked at the piece of art, the more subtle detailing I noticed. The blue detailing on the wings and the mix of various patterns throughout create a quirky feel, and the subtle black writing within the right wing is used to create a textile of its own. All in all, a very visually appealing image ~Marie Fitzgerald

  12. Dan Eldon's seventh entry in his New York and Beyond collection stood out the most to me. I found the African inspired work to almost speak for itself. The focal point I noticed first was the Man's tribal painted face because of its massiveness. After, I noticed the bright green skyline which balanced the two pages, asymmetrically. The third aspect of the entry I saw were the repeated silhouettes at the bottom of the left page which created movement. The movement then carried my eyes horizontally up the page to the second skyline from the second perspective that was instead, a media representation which also created repetition. Then I began to see the smaller pictures in side pictures on the right hand side, next to the face. On this page several different pictures and topics were brought to life, such as the woman in the bakery, the neon lion and the cover of the comic book. However, before seeing those three scenes my eye was immediately drawn to the repeated eye as the tribal man. Overall I believe the main theme of this journal entry was to enhance his ability to move your eyes across the page, through size, color and repetition. -Kassidy R-H

  13. Teesha Moore's journal stood out to me more than Dan Eldon's journal entries because the way she combined different styles of media. She uses so many differnt colors and creates great examples of contrast on each page. You can look at all of her pages and find similarities to the others but still each page is very different. She makes sure each page is full. She always has a good focal point that immediatly directs your eyes to the piece. Teesha is very original and unique which is a quality that i would like to have in my own journal. -Katie Cohen

  14. For my blog assignment i chose to do Teesha Moore`s artwork. Her artwork is very interesting because in almost every piece she has a face. Her texture of the artwork is smooth. Also she uses different patterns and colors. When you look at the artwork it really stands out because her color contrast stands out. I also like how her style is similar in each piece she did. Also she is has really nice detail in the art pieces, for example in the faces. A lot of her painting are bright and warm, which is something that interests me about her work. In almost all her work her focal point would be the faces, the face draws your attention and i notice the faces before anything. Her art work is unique and stands out. The contrast from the face and backround stands out and her out work is neatly and nicely done.

  15. For this assignment I chose to look at Teesha Moore's journal because I found her work very colorful & eye catching. I like how she used different elements on each page to create focal points that capture the observer's attention. I also liked how for some entries, her artwork took up two pages instead of just one, and I found it very impressive that she took up nearly all of the space on each page. I especially liked how she not only used simple elements such as paint and colored pencils, but also things such as magazines and photos. Her pages made me wonder what was going through her mind as she was designing them, and the words that she wrote on certain pages gave me a little more understanding of that, but also made me more curious about what she was thinking about at that time. I like how when you look at the book as a whole, everything kind of connects together in the way that they were designed, even though each page is different from each other in their own unique way.

  17. For this homework assignment I have chose Dan Eldon because it stood out more than Teesha Moore. The reason why Dan's stood out more to me is that he used pictures from magazines and newspapers and it gave it a 3D affect to the artwork. The one journal book that caught my attention was the New York and Beyond book. The most impressive journal entry to me was the women with an eye on her forehead, a painted face, and four eyes eyes. To me what stands out in this entry were the eyes because there's its unusual to see more than two eyes on a face. I liked how Dan used an African type style form of art. Each and every page is different and unique in their own way and not repeating the same artwork.

  18. I really like Dan Eldon's work because he gets very creative and unique with how he spots his drawings and how he blends one page with the one next to it. For example, he drew a man looking to the left on one page and drew the same man looking to the right on the right page. He makes them have different colors and have different effects so it Is the same theme but a totally different perspective and view. i also like how he makes some his pieces have a meaning on one page then on the other he draws pictures to add more details. I like that he has both pages black and white then adds a tiger that has color and that the tiger is all the way on the left side side so it draws attention even though its not in the middle of the page.

  19. For this assignment I chose Dan Eldon. I loved how he incorporated colors and patterns into all of his entries and my favorite for all of the entry's was either the first or the second entry because of all of the colors and how he put the bodies and superman into them. I also love how he put many things, some of which had nothing to do with the next and subsumed the apartment buildings with all of the colors in contrast with the bodies.

  20. I like Teesha Moore's entries because it was very interesting, she used distorted heads and blended colors to create eye-catching works. I also like how she used a pretty vibrant pink on several of her entries. Personally, children in art always interest me, their innocent precious facial features such as their cheeks and their big sparkling eyes give the work a unique feeling. I also like Dan Eldon's unique work and how he uses it to send messages clearly, loudly, and beautifully. His story behind the work makes it even more interesting to look at.

  22. Dan Eldon's very symbolic final journal work, in Africa, shows more third-world associated, drearily colored pictures of men and women (assumedly African), and places and objects, as opposed to his paint splatters, which are usually solid and colorful, giving a more haunting ambience, but at the same time, creates an exuberant feel, which makes a creepy experience. The journal begins very abstract. He made collages of the pictures of the people of Africa, some who looked emaciated, and painted on them with lively colors. The work is almost frightening at times and it radiates a cultural vibe. Most of his art is pictures pasted together in cunning ways. He used a variety of mediums, probably acrylic paint, mostly, and makes large strokes and splatters, and the lines are not usually too think, however, in some pages, he used thin ink. It's sloppy at times, but this adds a cool element. As it progresses, less of his own tampering comes into play and more of the collages, more warlike on each page. Some of his pictures display joyful emotions, but most display a pessimistic vibe. The pages are often spreads, sharing the same idea over each side of the 2 pages. He adds some textures to fill up the page, and there's usually not much white space. On certain pages the eye is lead around but most spreads did not have a focal point, because most of the pictures were equally striking. The pages' reoccurring overall themes show his very own experience from Africa, and what really struck me is that this was his final journal.
