Two more journal artists to look at this week. Look at both artists then write a response (minimum 1 paragraph) comparing and contrasting the two artists. You may use specific pages from each artists or speak about their work as a whole.

Please talk about the similiarities and differences you see. Remember to discuss the Elements of Art: line, shape, color, value, and texture and where they're used. Also think about the design principle called Emphasis. How does each artist create a center of interest (Shout) or emphasis?

This assignment is due Tuesday, October 7th.

  1. Viewing these two artist i noticed a lot of similarities and differences. some differences saw was when i looked at karen michel she has more of a colorful state of mind. When i looked at Tracy Moore i noticed that she has more of an ancient look to hers and she doesnt focus on the color as much as karen michel does. A similarity in them is i noticed that they both have so much to fit on the page and it seems like they have so many ideas that the journal is really what comforts them because of the way they draw and their mind is kind of on the page because they take up so much space and it gives the viewer a sense of comfort and wonder. Another difference is that Karen michel uses more color and water based colors and it can connect to younger artists, where Tracy Moore uses more solid colors and makes her work look much older.

  2. After comparing and contrasting both Tracy Moore and Karen Michel artwork you can see many similarities and differences. Both artists have strong focal points as well as fill in every inch of the journal. Each page in their journals
are unique and may have no tying theme to the other. Likewise both artists just express what there feeling. An example of this is in Tracy Moore's journal on page 25 when she just talks about a restaurant she likes. They both create focal points by outlining the object and adding small details to led your eye around the piece. Some differences were that both artist had different styles of art. Moore's pieces used more lines and shapes where Michel focused on color and value. Moore also uses colors like blacks and whites with pops of color here and there, while Michel uses many colors and sends out a central message.

  3. Tracy Moore and Karen Michel have a similar style, which consists of oddly-shaped, humanoid, sometimes grotesque, creatures, mixed in with collages and personified objects. Tracy Moore’s book is much more dark and colorless. It has lots of writing in the background with strong focal points on every page. Karen Michel’s journal is much more colorful and evokes a more cheerful attitude. She also does a lot of two-page spreads. They both have a reoccurring theme of inner-being. Both deal with loving yourself, and being creative, but Tracy Moore’s has some dark tones, such as death and monsters. Tracy Moore has dark and defined lines, and lots of shading and value going on in her drawings, while Karen Michel has a lighter and more playful tone, but looks rough.

  4. Karen Michel and Tracy Moore both create beautiful journals with some similarities and differences. Both artists create a focal point by making it the biggest and most noticeable object on the page. Tracy Moore surrounds the focal point with words while Karen Michel mostly surrounds the focal point with color. Tracy Moore uses a lot less color than Karen Michel and also uses a lot more words.

  6. As I was comparing and contrasting Tracy Moores and Karen Michels artwork I noticed a lot of elements they used to make there artwork standout. A similarity of both artists artwork was that they both filled the page and used many different creative shapes to let the artwork speak. I also noticed that in many of Tracy Moores artwork she used bright and vibrant colors to emphasize the focal point and in the backround used black and white. However Karen Michel made her focal points big instead of bright and used more water colors to send a calm peaceful message through out her artwork.

  7. Tracy Moore and Karen Michel have very different art styles. However, the two artists’ journals have many similarities as well as differences. For example, Moore and Michel both used collage in many of their journal pages. Both artists also included some aspects of 3D on the covers of their journals, and layered over their art to make it more interesting, and to create a stronger focal point. A few differences between Michel and Moore’s journals is that Moore adds more of a personal touch to her pages. An example of this is on pages 22, 23, and 26 where she incorporates pictures of her dog and mentions a restaurant that she likes. Moore also includes notes of her thoughts within her pieces, which also adds a personal touch. Another difference would be the fact that Michel adds more color to her pages than Moore does. Moore’s pages are mainly black and white, with a pop of color that draws your attention. Michel creates pages with more color on the entirety of the page.

  8. While observing the two sketchbooks of Tracy Moore and Karen Michel, I noticed many different themes and techniques used by both artists. Tracy Moore's pages have an almost storybook feel to them because of her use of a written background to create texture. Tracy Moore also emphasizes her focal points by using pops of color on a mostly black and white page. Karen Michel's sketchbooks has her own style of creativity because she uses different materials to show texture on her pages. For example, she might've sewed on some fabric or glued on accessories like buttons to make her sketches stand out. Her sketchbook is much more colorful than Moore's and makes her entries look like a texturized scrapbook page. Both sketchbook artists have a different theme to their pieces but neither fail to make their focal points stand out. This is achieved in many ways, such as outlining the most important part, using texture on a certain point, or just making it plain colorful. All in all, both sketchbooks seemed to have a lot of feeling because of the effort put into them.

  9. Karen Michel and Tracy Moore both show their artistic ability and creativity throughout their journal pages. They both use strong focal points surrounded by designs and drawings. They fill the page, leaving no empty spaces. They both layer different aspects of their pages and use various mediums. For example, Tracy Moore fills her background with writing and puts drawings and pictures over it. Although there are many similarities seen in these two journal artist’s work, there are also some differences. Filling her backgrounds, Tracy Moore also uses a lot of text. She works in black and white often and uses doodles throughout her pages. As shown in her 27th entry, unlike Tracy Moore, Karen Michel uses more colorful designs in her journal. Despite their different styles, Karen Michel and Tracy Moore do use some of the same techniques and are both very talented artists.

  10. Both journal artists are similar to each other and different in many ways. One main difference is in the colors used. Tracy Moore uses a lot of black and white really emphasizing the different values from white to black. Karen Michel uses a great deal more color and rarely leaves a page without at least some color. When Karen Michel does use black and white the drawings have little difference in value. In one entry she left the page white and simply drew in pen. Tracy Moore however constantly deals with value differing greatly. Her pages are often heavily shaded with quite a bit of contrast. Another difference is in texture. Karen Michel’s entries often have beads, cloth, or other added on pieces that seriously stick out. Tracy Moore on the other hand rarely has added on articles and her pages are more uniform. Also both artists use emphasis differently. Tracy Moore likes to have obscure faces as focal points. She also likes to write a lot in the background which Karen Michel doesn’t. Instead, Karen Michel often uses large colorful objects as her shout/emphasis. One similarity I noticed is that both artists can occasionally make morbid entries, for example, dealing with skeletons. Also, both of them don’t just connect everything. Every part of the journal entry sticks out and is unique.

  11. Tracy Moore and Karen Michel have very different journal pages and art styles. After comparing the two journal pages i can tell that Tracy Moore's journal pages are mostly black and white and some of her journal pages can be violent. Also i saw a lot of word or lyrics in the background of her pages. Most of her journal pages mostly use ink or pencil.
Karen Michel uses a lot of bright colors in her journal pages to make them all stand out. She also uses a patterns in most of her pages to make them interesting. From comparing Tracy and Karen's journal pages i can see that Karen uses objects like pieces of cloth and buttons, and Tracy uses more of her artistic skills and drawing skills unlike Karen. Both of their journals are different have something unique about them.

  12. You can often tell who a person is through their artwork. In this aspect, it proves true, as I can get an essence of who these two artists are and what their personalities are. Mitchel's journal pages were happy and expressed joy through her use of many colorful mediums. She also used religious symbols such as the cross. Many times, she used collages, similar to Moore, who also used collage. What sets Moore's work apart from Michel's work is that most of her pages are black and white, incorporating very little color into her pages, instead adding in elaborately drawn morbid faces. Her pages are much more dark and mysterious. She even incorporates sculls and fangs into some pages.

The "eye catcher" or "shout" part of Michel's work is sometimes emphasized with color (because majority if her pages contain very little color) while Moore's "eyecatchers" are based on size (her pages contain much color.)

  14. The two journal artists, Tracy Moore and Karen Michel have distinct journal pages that truly reflect their styles as artists. Moore's work, for the majority, was in black and white. He used rough, defined lines on his pages. Differing from Moore, Karen Michel's journals were covered with softer, almost faded images and drawings. Also unlike Moore, Michel filled her pages with bright colors. Further, the two artists found different and similar ways of establishing a focal point. Moore, because of his mostly colorless pages, was able to draw the eye with a pop of color, usually as a photo. Karen Michel was able to create a center of interest by playing with proportion and making some objects much larger than others, this is also a technique Moore used. Different from Moore as well, Michel's pages were not as tightly packed with drawings, and many times only contained one major drawing. Both incorporate photos into their journals, however. Although their approaches were often quite different, Tracy Moore and Karen Michel both created beautiful and unique journals.

  15. Tracy Moore and Karen Michel are two incredibly talented journal artists but have very distinct entries. Moore uses dark middle ground elements and words as a background to the centered eye candy. Karen Michel expresses her work with more color then Moore. But when Moore does use a color element it really makes the focal point pop out. Michel needs to contrasts warm and cool colors for her focal point to pop. Both these artist have an interest in adding real pictures into there work instead of drawing or painting a focal point.

  16. Both Tracy Moore and Karen Michel are very talented artists in the artwork of Tracy her pictures rarely contained color and the focal point of them was a face or faces in some of her artwork. Karen on the other hand enjoyed adding objects sometimes sewed and others just glued on to her artwork. Karen also had some black and white journal entries. Both of these artists are creative in their own way and they even can be seen as similar.
