Two More Journal Artists

Two more journal artists to look at this week. Look at both artists then write a response (minimum 1 paragraph) comparing and contrasting the two artists. You may use specific pages from each artists or speak about their work as a whole.

Please talk about the similiarities and differences you see. Remember to discuss the Elements of Art: line, shape, color, value, and texture and where they're used. Also think about the design principle called Emphasis. How does each artist create a center of interest (Shout) or emphasis?

This assignment is due Tuesday, December 6th.

  1. These two artists tend to have some consistencies between them. They both incorporate many free-form shapes into their journal entries. They also use a lot of uncommon materials. However, Karen Michel tens to use felt more often, and she mostly does covers, not pages. Whereas Tracy Moore typically mutilates a pen in the making of each of her pages. xXx_MLG_mattgraci_MLG_xXx

  2. From afar, the two artists look very distinct: Tracy Moore works very dominantly in black and white, with occasional focal points of color. Her entries tend to be both physically and emotionally darker than Karen Michel's, and Moore heavily annotates her entries. On the other hand, Michel uses a lot of bright, positive or neutral colors.
Both artists, upon further inspection, had positive, encouraging messages in many of their pieces. They both have styles that feel looser and less structured, kind of free and open in their own ways, as opposed to clean cut and measured. [Erin Zipman]

  3. These two artists are very different. Tracy Moore using mostly black and white in her journals and using a lot of words to really get her point across. Karen Michael using more color in her journals overall and very rarely goes dark and scary. Karen overall has simpler but very well executed journals. From what I have seen Karen seems to be a bit more versatile in her journals where as Moore dominantly uses black and white. I like a lot how both artists try to bring a positive point across in their journals. Overall, while being very different artists overall, they are both amazing artists. (Shane Seta)

  5. Both artists love using abstract themes to compose their entries. Tracy Moore used more words to express herself, mostly using black and white. Karen used many different mediums, in color. Karen Michael's entries are more simple compared to Moore's. Karen also seems to enjoy making covers of sketchbooks rather than pages, while Moore focused more on the pages. Even though they're different, they're both very capable and creative artists.

  6. Both artists were into collage materials and using random images and objects in the entries. However, Tracy Moore's style is more black and white, and she utilizes words more. Her main center of interest is created by some black and white image that can be drawn or possibly obtained from somewhere. Karen Michael's style is much more colorful, and somewhat simpler. She has more texture in her work, giving it more "pop" and a 3D feel. Both of these artists, nonetheless, have great journals and unique ways of expressing themselves through art.

  7. Both contemporary journal artists incorporated many complex illustrations. They both used alluring focal points and utilized textual elements, but Tracy Moore and Karen Michel had very different pieces. Moore’s works had more emphasis on detailed middle ground elements and used a lot of black and white as opposed to brighter hues. She used a lot of faces in her works, which invoke emotion in the viewer. Karen Michel used more stark, simplistic focal points as well as single-word themes instead of clusters of text like Moore did. She also used more color and vivid tones in her journal entries. Both artists are very skilled and create brilliantly detailed art pieces.

  8. I do think both artists are wonderful each with there own style. But both sharing some ideas incorporating or metric shapes. Tracy Moore did use more black and white. Both did express points using tactics that really stood out. One used an ad from possibly a green environment magazine. One uses other not common materials for her journals. Both journals could possibly help me with possible ideas when coming up with other journal entries. Both artists are truly astonishing.

  9. Both of these artists produced beautiful pieces of art that are astonishingly fabulous to look at. They both incorporated collage elements and added other whisper elements around the focal point. Teesha Moore, however, used more black and white details rather than Karen Michel. Karen Michel used more colors and words to show the photo rather than just using black and white. Overall, they both created amazing peices of art and should both be extremely proud of themselves.

  10. I believe both artist exhibit many great artistic medians within there works including strong vocal points. Although, one difference I would point out is that Moore's work seems to be less vibrant in color compared to Michel's expression of color within her work.
Overall, both artist have many great art pieces exhibiting their creative views in a brilliant, and passionate way.

  11. Both of these artists have their similarities and differences. They both have unique journals incorporating different materials into shapes. Tracy Moore has an overall more darker theme to her journal but it is still extremely interesting. When I look at Karen Michaels journal I can tell she uses a lot of colors throughout. Both artists are different while both have very cool journals with inspiring entry's! (Julianna M)

  12. Both journals are very creative, and both have an interesting focal point. Tracy Moore has more of a written full page background style, and most of her journal have dark theme with different types of pattern. In the other hand Karen Michel, has more of a colorful background with combination of collages with shapes and different patterns. (Mischelle P.)

  13. Tracy Moore's work seems to take on a heavily text based standpoint. Her work, while usually surrealistic, is very straight and defined. Karen's however, uses more natural strokes with a bit of waver that gives it a professionally messy look. Karen uses lots of collage/felt work rather than drawing to set up the focal point, pieces of newspaper and felt for example. Karen also uses a lot of what seems to be a water color background, it never is zesty enough to distract from the "shout" but it is always a nice touch. -David Futcher 2k16

  14. Both artists have put significant detail and unique materials to make astonishing art journals. Even though they use their own perspectives and emotions as there own style, I found similar lines, shapes and objects in all pages. They use these elements along with a focal point that stands out to please the viewer and make brilliant pages come to life. There are overall differences like Tracy Moore's use of intense words as a background while Karen Michael had bigger, more concrete objects with a brighter but soft lines. I liked the use of random materials like metal or stitches. Very inspiring works! Tessa Small

  15. Tracy Moore and Karen Michael both constructed great journals with many different aspects that make them each unique. Both artists used different color schemes and collages that made the journals similar, and dissimilar. Tracy Moore mostly used words in her backgrounds, and her artwork had a darker feel, creating deeper emotion. Moore incorporates black and white colors which show her unique ways of creating her own journal as well. Karen Michael, in their art used larger and more colorful items and collages than Moore. Michael also used random materials such as stitches and metal which was a very unique art style by them. Both artists had beautiful journals and all had different ways of creating it.
